"She knew things that nobody had ever told her. For instance, the words of the trees and the wind. She often spoke to falling seeds and said, "Ah hope you fall on soft ground," because she had heard seeds saying that to each other as they passed."
– Zora Neal Hurston, Their Eyes Were watching God
I want to dive into the details. Our empathy is personal. Our understanding is individual. What we gain from reading a novel, immersing ourselves in the moments of a poem, getting to know the ins and outs of our favorite tv character, or staring into a paintings’ face full of brushstrokes, surface textures and moments in time are the details that allow us to understand what is universal in all of us, because we recognize ourselves in those details. We see that we are not alone. We can understand ourselves through the smallest of noticings. I endeavor to find those details that connect us through portraiture whether that be of people, animals, trees, living things, or objects. I hope you will join me.
I graduated Summa Cum Laude with a Bachelor in Fine Arts from Columbus College of Art and design. Since then I have continued to explore what art means. I have found inspiration in the social sciences which has led me back to portraiture in many forms. I continue to explore.
